Savouring Menorca

Menorca is a small Balearic island in the Mediterranean Sea. Past Ibiza and its well known neighbour Mallorca, it’s perfect for ‘off the beaten path’ seekers with just as much to offer. Especially when it has more km of beaches than Mallorca and Ibiza put together.

Located at the southern end of the island of Menorca is the capital Mahon, a city of streets meandering through the extraordinary historical architecture of 17th and 18th century buildings and also known as the birthplace of mayonnaise.

For a day in Mahón, its best to join in with island time where café’s will open up at 8am, but not much else will show signs of life till later in the morning. Head to Es Llonguet Forn Artesa (@esllonguet_fornartesa) and order a "café con leche y ensaimada". These deliciously sugary pastry’s are the perfect sweet burst to compliment your caffeine hit. Throughout the streets you will find countless shops solely dedicated to the Menorcan sandal. These handmade leather shoes come in every colour imaginable and are a favourite on the island with every local owning a pair. With a minimal presence of main stream designers, it leads the way for independent boutiques to line the rest of the streets. From boho clothes shops, to bespoke leather handbags, you’ll find a range of unique items. All the while walking amongst beautiful renaissance buildings, with Santa Maria cathedral rising above at the end of the main street.

For dinner options head to the harbour of Mahon. Being the second largest natural harbour in the world, second to Pearl harbour, the long line of seafront restaurants are perfect for an evening stroll and a late night meal. Or you can go further into the city and walk up the steps towards the old town hall to find Mahon’s Plaça d’Espanya. A fish market operating since 1927, serves fresh fish caught that morning and a selection of locally made produce of hams and famous Mahon cheese. The food is presented in a bite size tapas elegance, great for those who want to try a bit of everything, and at affordable prices. The market comes with two bars filled with Spanish wine’s and craft beer, then to complete the experience you can take all your pickings into the outside courtyard to sit and consume to your hearts content.
